Gumbo Soup (Low Cal) Recipe
Recipe
Ingredients
12 cup water 6 tsp vegetable bouillon granules 4 tomatoes, fresh or 1-lb can 1/2 cup corn, fresh or canned 1 celery rib, diced 1 onion, diced 1/2 cup okra, cut 1/4 cup rice, white or brown 1/8 tsp tabasco sauce (optional) 1 cup shredded cabbage (optional)
Recipe
Preparation
Directions: Place all ingredients in a large pot, bring to boil, cover and simmer about 20 minutes until all vegetables are done. 1-l/2 C serving equals about 35 calories.
NOTE: I use Uncle Ben's Converted Rice as it seems to hold its shape better in long cooking periods. Any rice will work if this soup is not reheated several times, but it usually is!
This is a thin soup, I sometimes add shredded cabbage, chard, bok choy, or other green vegetable to it. The greens make it thicker and more filling, but add few calories. This doesn't resemble the real Cajun Gumbo, but is good for those days when you feel you've over-indulged and need to cut back. I keep in it the fridge and use it as a snack when I just have to have something else. You can also add herbs, hot pepper, it is very versatile, and a good starting recipe. Original, from Files of A. Food Tips of the Week
Advice on losing weight
If you enjoy your food, but want to become thin and also improve your overall physical condition, then, as most people know, you should follow a meticulously prepared wholesome dietary regime. Theoretically, this needs to involve 5 standard portions of grains, cereals and vegetables every day and also contain the optimum fusion of important nutrients.
The argument against reduced carbohydrate diets
Its extremely popular, but it is truly safe for you?
The majority of the negative side effects stated, such as general tiredness, diarrhea, constipation, or headaches seem to be only temporary, but critics contend that low carb diets are not without permanently harmful side effects.
Moreover, it has been suggested that the kidneys may be given too much work to do and that the consequential change in blood acid levels can result in bone loss, but some of the studies testing the hypothesis have struggled to find real evidence of damage to the kidneys or loss of bone.
Foods rich in flavonoids
(inlcudes citrus fruits, cabbage, scarlet runner bean and basil)
The nutrients called 'flavonoids' discovered in these fruit, vegetables and pulses are thought to have properties in preventing cancer.
Doctors researching the properties of flavonoids believe they also have most other health benefits, amongst them, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory capabilities.
The majority of these are also good for weight loss, so should be included in your diet system.
