Budget: Bean Pot On The Run Recipe

Recipe Ingredients

1 ham bone, or ham hock
2 cup tomato juice
1 onion, chopped
1 sweet green pepper, chopped
4 whole cloves
28 oz canned baked beans
19 oz canned kidney beans, drain
1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp wine vinegar
1 tsp dry mustard

Recipe Preparation

If you dont have a ham bone, or ham hock, a piece of smoky bacon or
smoked sausage will suffice.

In large saucepan, combine ham bone, tomato juice, onion, green
pepper and cloves. Bring to boil and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove
bone from pan.

Cut away any meat. Discard bone and cloves. Return meat to pan along
with baked beans, kidney beans, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar and
mustard. Bring to boil; simmer for about 20 minutes or until sauce is
thickened. 6 servings for $10.44 CDN [Mar/95]

In planning a diet, the important thing is to also endeavour to restrict your ingestion of refined carbohydrates, salt and fats.

* You can create really great smoothies using low carb yogurt. I know, it is not really cooking, but if you must have smoothies you can make them with low carbohydrate yogurt and fruit. * Understand the food labels Watch out for advertizing that proclaims 'low carb' - check the actual nutritional information on the back of the package. A good number of are only a little reduced and in some cases still higher than a competitors normal brand. Also, beware of 'low sugar' and 'low fat' labels - 'low sugar' doesn't always mean 'low carb' - usually the carbs are identical.

These orange and green healthy plants contain alpha-carotene and beta-carotene thought to help in helping stop cancer, spefically cancer of the esophagus. A good number are low in calories, so should be included in every weight loss regime.
