A Gahntze Tzimmes Recipe

Recipe Ingredients

3 to 4 lbs boneless brisket
2 tbsp schmaltz (rendered chicken fat)
3 large carrots
1/2 lb prunes--pitted
1/2 lb dried apricots
1 lemon--thinly sliced
3 large sweet potatos
1 juice of 1 orange
5 cup boiling water
1 1/2 tbsp brown sugar
2 tbsp flour

Recipe Preparation

Sear meat well in hot fat in a Dutch oven or heavy skillet on top of
the stove. Transfer to a roasting pan. Peel carrots and cut in
1-inch round slices. Place them around the meat. Add prunes, apricots
and lemon slices. Peel sweet potatos and cut in 1-inch slices. Place
over meat and fruit in the roaster.

Add orange juice to boiling water. Combine brown sugar and flour and
add enough water to make a thin paste. Add this paste to the orange
juice mixture. Pour over the Tzimmes. If necessary, add more boiling
water to bring liquid to the top of the tzimmes.
Cover. Bake at 400 degrees for 1 hour. Reduce heat to 325 F. and
continue baking 4 1/2 hours. Uncover and bake 30 minutes longer.

Food Tips of the Week

Diet hints and tips

In deciding on a diet, it is essential to attempt to lower your consumption of fat, salt and refined carbohydrates.
Some low carb diet tips:
* Make reduced carbohydrate breadcrumbs for deep fried foods. Whilst you can sometimes buy reduced carb bread crumbs, you may make them at home by using low carb bread. All you have to do is toast the reduced carbohydrate bread in the oven on a baking tray. Once it is well browned, whizz it in your blender. To store, keep in an airtight container.

* Use splenda instead of sugar. Most recipes that require sugar can be adapted to make use of a sugar substitute like splenda. It is not exactly the same so you will need to do a bit of trial and error and it may not work for everything, but it does a decent job for the most part.

Superfoods containing flavonoids
(inlcudes olive oil, brussels sprouts, soy and chamomile)

The flavonoids which exist in these types of food are thought to have properties in helping to prevent cancer.
Experts investigating the medical effects of flavonoids suspect that they could have many other health giving properties, amongst them, anti-viral and antitumor properties.
Most also have a low calorie count, so make sure you add them to your weight loss regime.
